Campsites at North Pines are available up to five months in advance on the 15th of each month at 7:00 a.m. (PT). For example, on February 15,  arrival  dates for the time period June 15 to July 14 become available to reserve, and therefore, the full  arrival  date window would be from season opening to July 14.  
 North Pines Campground is located in breathtaking Yosemite National Park in Central California's rugged Sierra Nevada Mountain Range at an elevation of 4000 feet. The site is situated in the heart of Yosemite Valley, an awe-inspiring landscape containing many of the famous features for which Yosemite National Park is known.  Within Yosemite, visitors can gaze upon waterfalls, sheer granite cliffs, deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, vast wilderness areas and so much more. 
  Reservation tips!  Campsites in Yosemite are extremely popular and typically sell out in minutes on the regular on-sale dates. Login to your account or create a new account before the 7:00 a.m. (PST) release time. You may only add reservations to your cart and proceed with your reservation if you are logged into your account. North Pines Campground is one of the three reservation campgrounds in Yosemite Valley. It offers paved roads and parking spurs, flush toilets, and drinking water. Each campsite contains a picnic table, fire ring, and a food storage locker. 
 Yosemite's free shuttle bus stops near the campground entrance. Nearby, historic Curry Village offers showers (for a fee), a general store, restaurants and bar, amphitheater, and a tours and activities desk. 
Yosemite Valley is forested with a diverse mix of California black oak, Ponderosa pine, Incense-cedar, White fir, and Whiteleaf Manzanita, which offers a pleasant combination of sun and shade.  
Through the trees, Yosemite's telltale granite cliff faces are visible, and the gentle, refreshing Merced River flows nearby.Within one to two hours, visitors can drive or ride a shuttle bus to some of Yosemite's most grand viewpoints and historic sites. Glacier Point offers sweeping views of Yosemite Valley, Little Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, Vernal and Nevada Falls, and Clouds Rest, among other notable landmarks.   
A visit to Wawona and the Pioneer Yosemite History Center is like stepping back in time.   
The Tioga Road offers a 39-mile scenic drive past forests, meadows, lakes, and granite domes. Tuolumne Meadows embodies the high-country of the Sierra Nevada, with its broad sub-alpine meadows and granite domes and peaks.   
Beautiful Hetch Hetchy Reservoir is home to spectacular scenery and numerous wilderness trailheads.Yosemite's trails, cliffs, roads and rivers provide endless recreational activities for any kind of visitor. Hiking, biking, rock climbing, fishing, horseback riding, rafting, auto touring, and photography are all very popular activities within the park.   
Hiking trails range from the easy paved, two-mile roundtrip walk to Mirror Lake/Meadow, to the grueling but rewarding 14- to 16-mile trek to Half Dome (permit required). Both of these trails begin near the Pines Campgrounds, and many additional trailheads are within Yosemite Valley.   
Rafting the Merced River is a fun way to cool down on a summer day when water levels are sufficient. Yosemite Valley also offers numerous guided bus tours, educational programs, museums, ranger-led activities,and an art center with workshops.

 Jumbo Rocks Campground lies amid the huge, steep rock formations for which Joshua Tree National Park is known. Close proximity to many boulders and rock formations, it is a popular camping location for families with kids. Jumbo Rocks is one of four campgrounds in the park that requires reservations year-round. To get the most out of your visit  Plan Like a Park Ranger   
 Travelers who enjoy warm, dry winters flock to Joshua Tree from October through May, when temperatures hover between 70-90 degrees during the day and drop to a 40-60 degree range at night. Summer is the park's off-season due to the uncomfortably-high desert heat. Jumbo Rocks is at an elevation of 4,380 feet. 
Campsites are nestled on a flat, sandy surface between large boulders that tower in unique shapes over the campground and rise up from the otherwise uniform desert landscape. The rocks were formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago and have been exposed and shaped by wind and water over time. They brighten with soft pastel hues during the morning and evening sunlight and low with campfire light by night. Visitors may want to keep their eyes out for typical desert inhabitants such as lizards, rattlesnakes, scorpions, ravens, squirrels and desert tarantulas during the cooler months of the year. Bobcats and mountain lions do live in the park, however they are rarely seen near humans.Rock scramblers flock to Jumbo Rocks Campground for the variety of geological formations and warmer temperatures that can be found in the interior of the park. Several hiking trails also leave from the campground. There is a short interpretive nature trail and plenty of rocks and canyons to explore within the facility. Clear desert skies are perfect for star-gazing.This large facility has 124 individual tent and RV campsites. There are no hookups or drinking water in the campground, however the town of Twentynine Palms is 12 miles away and provides basic amenities. The park allows six people and two vehicles per site, however, some sites are small and may not accommodate the maximum number of people and vehicles. See site details for specifics.

Tucked away at the base of the Teton Mountain Range, Jenny Lake Campground is situated within walking distance of the eastern shore of Jenny Lake, with views of Teewinot Mountain, Mount St. John, and into Cascade Canyon. This tent-only campground has two loops with 51 individual campsites, three of which are ADA-compliant sites, and 10 hiker-bicycler sites. The Jenny Lake Store is a five-minute walk from the campground and offers firewood, ice, clothing, souvenirs, and snacks.  
 Offering a wide array of activities including boating, hiking, and cycling, the Jenny Lake area is one of the most-visited sections of the park, making this campground a great location for exploration. The campground is open from earl-May to late-September, and is extremely popular. Those looking to camp at Jenny Lake are strongly encouraged to plan ahead and book early. 
Several popular trails begin at Jenny Lake. Hikers can loop the lake, visit Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point, or travel into the backcountry via Cascade Canyon. Longer and more challenging trails like Lake Solitude and Hurricane Pass are also accessible from this area. 
 Visitors of all abilities have a multitude of options for exploring the Jenny Lake area. Take a boat ride, set up a picnic on the lakeshore, go for a wildlife-spotting walk, or cycle along Teton Park Road using the multi-use pathway that extends from South Jenny Lake all the way to the town of Jackson. 
 The Jenny Lake Visitor Center makes its home inside the historic Harrison Crandall Studio. The original building was built in the 1920's, and recent renovations were completed in 2019. Stop in to chat with a ranger, visit the Grand Teton Association store, or learn about the history of art in conservation and the National Park Service. 
 Follow the Discovery Trail to Jenny Lake. Along the way, stop to explore interpretive panels highlighting area wildlife, history, and the creation of the landscape. Take an easy stroll to see the lakeshore, or use the path to access the boat dock and area trails. The Discovery Trail is a paved, 0.35m/0.56km trail, with wheelchair access to Jenny Lake. 
This location has limited staffing. Please call (877) 444-6777 for general information.Jenny Lake Campground is a tent-only campground. Trailers, campers, pop ups and ALL towables are not permitted. Each campsite includes a compact gravel parking space for ONE VEHICLE NO LARGER THAN 8 FEET HIGH AND 14 FEET LONG, a tent pad, a picnic table, a fire pit with metal fire grate, bear-proof food storage lockers, and access to nearby water spigots, flush toilets, and two token-operated showers. Only two tents are permitted per site. 
  ADA Access:  Three campsites are ADA compliant, and feature accessible picnic tables, leveled sites, and leveled pathways to accessible restrooms and payphone. One coin-operated shower is also ADA accessible. Routes to the amphitheater are not wheelchair accessible.  
 There is no WiFi/internet service at Jenny Lake Campground. The closest public wireless internet access is at the Craig Thomas Discovery & Visitor Center in Moose. Cellular coverage varies, and may be available depending on location within the campground and service provider. There is a campground host on-site, and a house phone located at the kiosk. Firewood, ice, and supplies can be purchased at the nearby Jenny Lake Store and not in the campground.  
Jenny Lake Campground is situated within short walking distance of Jenny Lake and right along the Grand Teton National Park bike path. The campground straddles a glacial moraine covered with an open forest of lodgepole pine, subalpine fir and Douglas fir. Across the lake, Teewinot Mountain, Cascade Canyon and Mount St. John dominate the landscape.  
 The Jenny Lake area is home to black and grizzly bears, moose, deer, and other large animals. Bears are often seen on trails and in the developed areas. Being prepared for an animal encounter can help ensure the safety of you and the wildlife. 
Visitors can take a self-guided tour of Grand Teton via the 43-mile Scenic Loop Drive, offering an opportunity to photograph the famous landscape and local wildlife. Make sure you stop at the historic Jackson Lake Lodge for its famous huckleberry milkshakes and spectacular Teton views through 60-foot tall wall-to-wall windows. While you’re there, book a scenic raft trip, park bus tour, or horseback ride. Then head a few miles north to Colter Bay Village where you can rent a kayak or canoe, take a guided boat ride to the majestic base of the Teton Range, or just enjoy lunch and the stunning lake view from the marina. A short drive from Jenny Lake is the town of Jackson, where you can visit the National Museum of Wildlife Art just north of town, walk under the famous giant elk antler archway in town center, attend the Jackson Hole Rodeo, browse local shops, or dine at one of the many restaurants. In the opposite direction, Yellowstone National Park is within easy reach by car, and has a great diversity of activities for everyone to enjoy.

The Needles is a remote district located within the southern portion of Canyonlands National Park in southeastern Utah. The Needles District is 1.25 hours driving time from Monticello, Utah, and 1.5 hours from Moab, Utah, and sits at an elevation of approximately 4,900 feet.  
  The Needles Campground offers limited services and are best suited to tents and small, self-contained campers and RVs.  If you are looking for group campsites, visit the  Needles District Group Campground  page. 
 
 You may book individual campsites in Loop B up to six months in advance for dates within the peak seasons – March 15 - May and September - October.  
 Loop A is available first come, first served only.

The Needles is a remote district with limited services and no cell coverage.  The Needles Campground and group sites are best suited to tents and small, self-contained campers and RVs. A seasonal campground host (spring and fall) is located in Loop A of the campground.   
 
  Individual Campsites:   Drinking water and flush toilets are available in the campground. Picnic tables and fire rings are provided at each site. There are no RV hook-ups. The campground does not have electricity, showers or a dump station.  Maximum vehicle length is 28 feet.

The campground contains stands of Utah juniper and pinyon pine. Flowering prickly pear cacti, yucca and other desert wildflowers dot the landscape in the spring, adding to the vivid colors of the surrounding red rock desert. The Needles District forms the southeast corner of Canyonlands National Park and was named for the colorful spires of Cedar Mesa Sandstone that dominate the area. The park is within an arid, high desert environment with hot summers and cold winters. 
Southeastern Utah offers breathtaking scenery, hiking, road and mountain biking opportunities, rafting and scenic driving routes. Arches and Mesa Verde National Parks, the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park, Hovenweep and Natural Bridges National Monuments and Dead Horse Point and Edge of the Cedars State Parks are all within three hours drive of the Needles Campground. Moab, Utah, (1.5 hours away) offers numerous restaurants, shops and museums.The Needles District's extensive trail system provides many opportunities for long day hikes and overnight backpacking trips. Foot trails and four-wheel-drive roads lead to such features as Confluence Overlook, Druid Arch, the Joint Trail and Chesler Park.

Lodgepole Campground  is located in the breathtaking Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks in central California's rugged Sierra Nevada range. Lodgepole is perched on the banks of the scenic and lengthy Marble Fork of the Kaweah River, at an elevation of 6,700 ft. The inspiring Giant Forest Grove and the mighty General Sherman Tree - the world's largest tree in volume - are just two miles from the campground.The General Sherman Tree, General Grant Tree, Moro Rock and Tunnel Log  are nearby, as is the informative  Giant Forest Museum and the Lodgepole Visitor Center.    
   Colorful  Crescent Meadow  offers views of vivid summer wildflowers and access to Tharp's Log, a cabin in a fallen sequoia.  
   Crystal Cave is Closed for the 2023 season.    Tours into Crystal Cave , one of hundreds of marble caves in the park, give visitors an interesting view of rock formations, fossils, rare minerals, and unique wildlife. Tickets are required, but are not sold at the cave entrance.   Reserve in advance on www.recreation.gov.   Tickets may also be purchased same day, if available, at the Lodgepole Visitor Center.  
   Crystal Cave  is about a 45 minute drive (13 miles/21 km) from the campground.  
 Vehicles longer than 22 feet long are prohibited on the narrow, winding Crystal Cave Road. 
Forty miles of trails , including the paved  Big Trees Trail , invite visitors to immerse themselves in the majesty of the ancient grove. Several additional popular hiking and wilderness trailheads are close by, including the trail to  Moro Rock , a granite dome with spectacular views of the Great Western Divide and western half of the park.  Tokopah Falls Trail  is an easy walk along the  Marble Fork of the Kaweah River , leading to an impressive 1200 ft. waterfall. Fly-fishing is also a popular activity on the Marble Fork. 
For facility specific information, please call (559) 565-4404.Lodgepole Campground is very popular with tent and RV campers alike.  It has paved roads, flush toilets, and drinking water. Picnic tables, fire rings, and bear food storage boxes are provided at each site. Lodgepole Village is a quick, 1/4-mile away, offering, a Visitor Center, market and gift shop.  Coin-operated showers and laundry facilities are not available for 2023 season.  
Lodgepole pine, Red fir, and shrubs forest the campground, while towering groves of giant sequoias and craggy granite peaks dot the landscape. The Marble Fork of the Kaweah River is fed by snowmelt and flows seasonally through the site. This region is characterized by warm days and cool nights in the summer and deep snow and cold days in the winter.

From Las Vegas: Death Valley Day Tour

Near some of the best wildlife watching opportunities in the park. Located at the end of a two mile dirt road, this campground is best suited for tents and small RVs. There are plenty of hiking and fishing opportunities in the area, including the Slough Creek Trail which begins nearby. Nighttime offers a quiet, unimpeded view of the stars and the possibility of hearing wolves howl. Elevation: 6,250 ft (1905 m).

The Slough Creek Campground is located on the park's Northern Range, a few miles from where Slough Creek meets the Lamar River. The Lamar Valley is an excellent place to view wildlife, with it being one of the major summer grounds for bison and elk, which attracts predators like wolves and grizzly bears.   

 Elk, bison, deer, and pronghorn thrive in the grasslands of this area, known as the northern range. In fact, some of the largest wild herds of bison and elk in North America are found here. The northern range is critical winter habitat for these large animals, which in turn provide food for several packs of wolves. Coyotes are also common, and occasional bobcat, cougar, or red fox are reported. The gorge and cliffs between the junction and Tower Fall provide habitat for bighorn sheep, osprey, peregrine falcons, and red-tailed hawks. Both grizzly and black bears are sighted throughout the area, particularly in the spring. Black bears are more commonly seen around Tower Fall and Tower Junction. Grizzlies are sometimes seen in the Lamar Valley and on the north slopes of Mount Washburn, particularly in the spring when elk are calving. Road pullouts provide excellent places from which to watch wildlife. 

 The campground can access the Slough Creek Trail, which follows a historic wagon trail into the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness beyond Yellowstone. It begins with a steep climb then descends to the first meadow. Stop and relax here or continue to the second meadow. Be alert for bears and moose. Slough Creek is a popular fishing area.

These days, you may most commonly see lightweight synthetic jackets worn casually around town for a little bit of warmth or weather protection on a cool fall or spring day. But aside from their frequent casual use, these jackets are a great multi-purpose midlayer for hiking, skiing, etc., and can be compacted down super tight to minimize space in your pack. Embarking on a day hike presents a great opportunity to immerse yourself in nature, either alone or accompanied by loved ones. Many state and national parks, as well as national forests, boast extensive trail networks for you to discover.

The contents of your hiking pack depend on several factors: the planned distance of your hike, the remoteness of your chosen location, and the anticipated weather conditions. Generally, the longer or more isolated the hike, or the more challenging the weather conditions, the more you should pack in terms of clothing, gear, food, and water.

Best Dog Hiking Gear of 2022

Hitting the trails with the pup is one of our favorite activities, and judging by all the other hiker-dog duos we cross paths with out there, we take it you share the sentiment. Most of us have spent a reasonable amount of time shopping or researching for our next outdoor gear purchase to make our adventures that much more fun or comfortable, but maybe you haven’t thought about how you could make your pups trip (and perhaps yours along with it) that much more easy, fun, and enjoyable.

We’ve hiked all over the country, and into some others, with our special little furry pals. And we’ve learned quite a bit along the way. So, we decided to make this quick list of our favorite doggo hiking gear for you and your buddy’s next trip out on the trails. 

RUFFWEAR, Front Range No-Pull Dog Harness 

Why we like it: Some of our pups can get a little excited on the trails, and regular collars can put some significant strain on the beck. This harness is great for hiking as it offers reflective design, soft interior padding, and no pull leash clips. 

Why we like it: We love this leash due to its versatility in adjusting between hand-held and waist worn. Meaning, this can easily be your everyday leash, but also a hiking leash that allows you to keep your hands free on the trail for taking pictures, holding trekking poles, scrambling up rocks, or just grabbing something from your bag. In addition, the bungee design makes the hike much more enjoyable as your pup navigates the terrain and chases new smells.

Why we like it: A good collapsible bowl to give your dog some much needed food or water is a must-have for any hiking trip. We can’t tell you how many times we’ve been on the trail without a bowl, and end up trying to pour water from a bottle into our pup’s mouth, only to waste half our water in the process. This bowl is great because it also tightens up at the top if you want to store some food or treats in your bag as well.

Why we like it: This thing is rad. If you’ve been on more than one hike with your pup, you’ve probably experienced a time when your dog decides to go #2 about 5 minutes into the hike and you’re stuck figuring out what to do with the waste bag. Well, rather than carrying it the entire trail, or worse, putting into your backpack, this waterproof carrying bag clips to a belt or outside of a backpack to minimize odors and get you back to focusing on enjoying nature. An added bonus is that it also stores and dispenses pick-up bags. 

Why we like it: You probably already have a water bottle, but we wanted to include one of our favorites in the list anyway. This Hydro Flask is great because it has a wide mouth straw for yourself, but you’re still able to easily twist off the top to fill up your doggo’s water bowl. These come in a variety of sizes up to 40 ounces, which should be plenty of water to cover you and the pup for a standard day hike. 

While not as critical for an everyday hike, we wanted to include some other solid gear for you and your pup’s hiking excursions. No one knows your pup better than you, so some of these items might be more up you and your furry friend’s alley than others.
